Simply drag & drop or select an image. Your photo is processed locally in your browser, with no signup required.
The browser compares possible lines between pins and repeatedly selects the line that best reduces the remaining image error.
Download the PNG preview and TXT pin sequence for free, then follow the step-by-step guide to create your physical string art.
String art is a geometric art form made by wrapping thread or string around nails or pins placed on a board. Also known as pin and thread art, this nail and string art technique uses simple materials to create patterns through geometry, spacing, and careful thread placement.
As a browser-based string art maker, StringAr measures light and dark areas in a source image, builds a path between evenly spaced pins, and exports the numbered nail-to-nail sequence for a circular portrait project.
The generated preview is a plan rather than a finished physical piece. Board size, nail placement, thread thickness, and tension all affect how the final project looks.
Need a precise nail placement template? Use our Custom Nailing Template Tool to generate printable templates with 50-500 nails, perfect spacing calculations, and downloadable PDF/SVG formats.
Open Template GeneratorChoose an image in the string art generator. StringAr processes it locally and generates the numbered pin sequence used to plan the physical project.
Use a wooden board (square or circular). Sand smooth and optionally stain or paint. Ensure the surface is completely flat for even nail placement.
Place nails at the numbered positions on the printed template. Drive each nail to a consistent depth while leaving enough exposed height for string wrapping.
Tie string or thread to the starting nail securely. Use a small knot and ensure it won't slip during the wrapping process.
Follow the generated sequence numbers to wrap string around nails creatively. Each number corresponds to a specific nail - simply follow the order to create your design.
Tie off the string at the final nail and trim the excess. Check the last few connections against the saved sequence before displaying the piece.
Each example pairs the source photo with the pattern generated by StringAr.
Pin Count: 80-150 pins
Best For: Simple portraits, geometric patterns, string art for kids
Contrast: High contrast black & white images work best
Time: 2-4 hours
Ideal Use Cases:
Pin Count: 150-250 pins
Best For: Detailed portraits, string art design patterns, geometric designs, gift projects
Contrast: Both standard and inverse contrast techniques
Time: 4-8 hours
Ideal Use Cases:
Pin Count: 250-400+ pins
Best For: Detailed portraits, complex artwork, professional projects
Contrast: Inverse contrast for dramatic effects
Time: 8-20+ hours
Ideal Use Cases:
Black & White Images: Start with simple black and white photographs for cleaner results and easier string routing.
Inverse Contrast: Try inverse settings for dramatic effects - particularly effective with 288+ pins for detailed facial features.
Pin Optimization: 288 pins provide the sweet spot between detail and manageable complexity for most string art ideas.
